'E87' is the engine code for the BMW N45 engine. This engine is a series of four-cylinder petrol engines developed by BMW. The N45 engine was first introduced in 2004 and was fitted to a range of BMW 1 Series and 3 Series models. The engine displaced 1.6 liters or 1.8 liters and featured a DOHC (dual overhead camshaft) valvetrain configuration. The N45 engine utilized BMW's Valvetronic variable valve lift system, which enabled precise control of fuel consumption and emissions. The N45 engine was eventually replaced by the BMW N46 engine in 2007, which featured improvements to fuel efficiency and reduced emissions.
